What Is Your Favorite Shooting Range?

Yeah... I'm in Weimar so it's 90 miles from me. I don't mind the heat but I was born here and when I was a kid there was no AC. Just an attic fan. Times have changed :) I'd prefer not to go back to that but I could if I needed to.

Not my favorite, but I went with a group including my grandson up to Copperhead Creek Gun Club yesterday. It's on the property of Hidden Falls Adventure Park and has about 200 acres total with about a dozen ranges. That doesn't include their Trap and Skeet facilities.

It's a decent place to take a group and if your group is 5 or more you can reserve a range ahead of time. All outdoor ranges at varying distances up to 300 yards.

Not overly expensive at $20.00/hour per person.

I won't be going there on a regular basis, but that's because of the hour plus travel time each way.

What part of Houston? There are Houston members at the range I shoot at in El Campo (post #3). 25yd, 50yd, 100yd, 200yd, and 300yd plus the pistol range are all covered. NRA range flags at 200 and 300 yards. Pistol range is behind a berm so even when pistol is hot the rifle range can service targets (and vice versa). Members only though I have taken guests with no issues.

Also,

The Ranch is near Eagle Lake. Up to 1000 yards. I don't have any photos of it yet.

I'm envious. I don't think there is anything like that in San Antonio or surrounds. I do have access to a private range. It meets my needs but I would do more on something like yours. Don

At $100 a year ($120 the first year) I think it's a bargain.

I think that's expensive. Throw ammo and gas usage, adds up. Don

It's expensive on a regular basis, but under the circumstances it was the best available option. If it was just one other person, I could have brought him as a guest to my regular club. But, I had two people with me, so that was out. We wanted outdoor shooting, so something like Range USA (which might be more expensive) was out.

It was worth the money and time to drive up to Coppermouth Creek to shoot.

I think that's expensive. Throw ammo and gas usage, adds up. Don

I'm a member of Golden triangle gun club in Beaumont love it there very nice up to 600 yards covered shooting concrete shooting tables only like 150 dollars a year all kinds of events and they really support the 4H kids

I prefer American shooting Center and shot there a lot when I live in Richmond, Tx. It’s way too far from League City. So now days I go to Texas City Range which is a really good range, but limited to 100 yard.

Austin Rifle Club probably though I MUCH prefer to shoot on private land. ARC keeps out the riff raff from what all I've seen.
I'd must prefer private land also. Nice that you have it.

For a quick session to shoot long range we go to Wallis Orchard gun range. It’s on the west side of Houston off Hwy 36. They have a 100 yard gun range, a 400 yard range both with probably 10 lanes. Then they have all kinds of pistol and action ranges, lots of space and friendly atmosphere.

For indoors range Texas Gun Club. They have two locations one in Stafford, the other south Houston both have all the fancy bells and whistles. Also friendly atmosphere with a gun store as well.

Fort Bliss, Texas Rod & Gun Club. As retired military (Army), I pay $150/year. Covered ranges are nice, helps to keep the blazing sun from burning too much.
This brought back memories of me going there with my uncle years ago. IIRC they were playing pinochle there once a week???

I thought I knew every gun range in the area. Never heard of Wallis Orchard. I lived in Pecan Grove in the 90’s. Might not have been around then.

I just got through shooting from under my carport. Due to terrain I can’t shoot less than about 50 yards off my bench, so I set up a folding shooting table and make do. This morning I continued my load development of .357 mag from my OM Blackhawk, (iron sights), and my NM Blackhawk .41, w/ a Weaver 2x6 scope.

In the .357 mag, 158 grain cast and coated hollow points, in the .41 mag, 210 grain Speer deep curls. Can’t shoot long here, it gets too hot !

No, they probably been around for 10-15 years. I just recently started going there instead of private land because of all the development in the area. I now have houses everywhere.

I was a member of ARC many years ago, but work and distance made it an expense I could let go. I much prefer private land but that is getting hard to find now. People here guns and run the other way. Our small muzzleloading club recently lost our place due to it being sold, so now we're looking again.

I used to shoot at Ponderosa over off Garrett road, and down at Clear Creek there around League City. Got kicked out of there back in the early 90's due to a disagreement about cease fire rules after myself and another get almost got hit by a bullet off the pistol range. Didn't go back until my grandson had to qualify for a youth hunt in Port Mansfield.

Now I usually head over to Pearland Gun Club for a couple hours here and there. Mostly to verify scopes or loads before heading to the woods. It cost a bit to keep the membership but it is cheaper than driving 3 hours to our property.

I've been to Hot Wells back in the day, and Marksman over in S. Houston several times. I also used to hit up the old theater Pasadena Gun Center once in a while. The owner was pretty cool and let me touch off a Barrett 50 in there one afternoon. I thought my 44 made some noise till he touch off and dust fell like rain across half the range. I had to go see WTH and he stood up and ask "ya wanna try it", well YEAH. Similar at Clear Creek when I was a regular, had a group show up with black powder 45 through 58 cal. One was a 45-90 or 100 from back in the 1880's. Still had a box of original paper wrapped cartridges for it. They asked if I wanted to try it out....BOOM, and about the time I turned to say that was cool, WHOP it hit the target. LOL

Nowadays, most of our, (myself and grandsons) is at our place in the country. My daughter and I built us a range back in the late 90's. We set up an 8x8 shed with two opening windows sorta like a firework stand. It ain't much but it has a solid bench on both sides, is accurate on distances, and covered. I have been known to set up Colman lanterns at the target holders and shoot at night due to the heat.

The range, 25, 50, 100, and 200, and the far treeline is 350yds. Just out in front of the tree line is a hump where the grass is sticking up, that is 300yds.

Had the grandsons out doing drills. I numbered the targets, and they had to hit the 4" spots withing 10 seconds. Just trying to get them accustomed to acquiring the targets and making a quality shot. Sometimes out deer an hogs don't stand still for long.

I'm going to be moving to the south side of San Antonio near A&M San Antonio.Does anybody have good suggestions for shooting ranges in the area.I'm a handloader for rifle cartridges and I'd really like to get into a gun club with a paid annual membership rather than one that charges a daily or hourly shootin fee.

Cedar Ridge Shooting range. Broken range. Or up here in New Braunfels at Dietz and/or the Schetzenverin.

Bayou Rifles is the club I am a member of has 100,300,600,1000 yards for rifle a wide arrangement for pistols and even shotgun.
We have 2 separate facilities. The large one is in Rosharon has an awesome layout and something for everyone the other range is geared for pistol and if not mistaken.22 rifle.
Go check out the website at Bayourifles.org
The calendar has all the events listed for both ranges and other information.

Am on the west side of San Antonio, local outdoor Public ranges include:

Black-Hawk on Jarrett Rd. In Atiscosa.

"A Place to Shoot" on South Side

"The Bullet-Hole" on Grossenbacher Rd.

Boerne Shooting Club in Boerne is a private range that holds rimfire and airgun matches regularly.

Diets in New Braunfels is a public range, hosts Benchrest Matches, on the same property is a Shutzenverin club, and Central Texas Silhouette Association, who host Silhouette, Highpower, F-class, matches and goes out to 500 meters.

Alamo Muzzleloading Gun Club is a private range that holds monthly Muzzleloading matches, but is hard to get in to, but have kicked out a lot of members recently, including myself.

Last time I looked they weren’t taking any new members. Bayou Rifles is about 35 min from my house in League City.

They do annual membership at the first part of the year It’s a first come first served application. I started showing up and watched matches and help to set up targets and got to know some of the people. I was interested in shooting FClass stuff .
They do have public welcome events go on line and view the club colander …

I took the concealed carry clad back in the day at Hot Wells and my dad took me there to sight in a scope on my first deer rifle…that brought back memories! We sued to go to the swimming pool there too.

I used to shoot at Eagle in Lewisville, but I found that Rifle Gear on 121 in the Colony has a senior discount. Mon - Thurs 10:00 am - 4:00 pm seniors range fee is only $10.00
I've been to Rifle Gear dozens of times and those folks always treat me with respect. I really like that place.

I haven't been yet but when it cools off a bit I'll be going to the Texas City range where seniors pay $3 per gun. Since I'll usually only be shooting my .22 Hornet at outdoor distances it will be only $3 or maybe $6 once in a while if I take my CZ also.
