What does this community actually drive? Chevy, Ford, Toyota, Dodge, or something else? No judgment here, I am just curious what people trust when they're 40 miles from pavement.

I drive a Ridgeline. Swing open door tailgate and locking trunk just like grandma's sedan only unlike hers waterproof and drainable. But I don't drive 40 miles from pavement. Or yards or inches even. Although I could within reason I guess.

I had always drove Fords trucks, 1969 F100, 4X4; then a 1976 F250 4X4 also a 1975 F100 but when I was getting ready to retire and knew I would be traveling alot I got and still drive a Dodge 2004 2500 4X4 and really like it alot.

I currently drive my first Ram 1500 4x4, 2023 version, I had a’17 Silverado Z71 until the Ram. The 5.3 Chevy engine was ok by itself but very underpowered when towing a trailer (18” tandem with a side by side) so not a lot of weight and about 9 mpg which is not good. Haven’t towed with the Ram so I can’t comment. I thought a lot about a F250 Tremor diesel which a friend has, I’ve spent a lot of seat time in it and like it, don’t know if it’s better than a Ram 2500 diesel 4x4 but a diesel is far superior when towing. One of the most important factors for me is comfortable seats and cabin design over a long distance. One of my friends bought a new Chevy 3500, drove it 300 miles and could barely get out of it because of the seat design, he returned it to the dealer when he got home and now has a F350 single wheel which he loves. I know that the Chevrolet 5.3 is having a lot of problems with camshaft failure, cheap Mexican metallurgy is the culprit but they won’t change so no more GM vehicles for me. Ram is returning to the Hemi, and going to a much longer drivetrain warranty which means that they are experiencing few enough issues that it is worth it to extend their warranty.

My first pickup was a new 1995 Ford Ranger STX with the 4.0 V-6, 4X4, with 5-speed Manual. I ordered it through Sacramento Ford, in CA exactly as I wanted it. That was a fun experience. It was a great truck for 14 years before I sold it with 139,000 trouble free miles and bought a brand new 2005 Ford F150 Lariat Crew Cab, V8, 4X4. Kept that until 2019 and gave it to my brother-in-law, with 88,000 miles on the odometer. That truck, was trouble free, too. Next up is my current truck that I purchased used just before I gave the F-150 to my BIL; a 2018 Ford F250 XLT Super Cab, 4X4, gasoline V8 engine. Had 39,000 miles on it when I bought it, it now has 52,000. Except for routine maintenance, none of my trucks have been in for repairs. Lucky track record, I know, but it is why I will always own a Ford truck!

Preach it brother !

My first new truck was a 1978 F250 Ford XLT 4WD. I hadn't been out of High School long (1976 grad). I worked at two dead end jobs until my dad told me to quit and that I was coming to work with him, working construction, building gas processing plants all over the US, and one in Egypt, not Egypt, Texas. Best decision he ever made for me :D I got to know him a lot better and it paid well with not much off time for spending money. After about a year of that I was, in my mind, rich, so I "special ordered" the truck I started the post with. Drive out was $7,800. Of course I Iifted it, put "36's" and new rims on it, headers, you know, essential items.

After about 3 years I got married and had kids, traded the truck on a more "responsible" thing to drive, a car. Ford something, wasn't a fan. I still had my '69 Camaro so my rumpled man card was still good :) I pretty much stuck with Ford until the 2000's. 2016? I think. I ordered a shiny new decked out Silverado with a Duramax. I drove that for 3 years then I gave that to my daughter and son-in-law at 200,000 miles (it ain't the years boys, it's the miles).

A couple of Fords later, about a year before Covid, I was working in NW NM for the current employer and all I had then was my 2000 Toyota Land Cruiser and a company truck. I still have the Land Cruiser and employer but the free ride went away when I moved to the Houston office (not a fan of Houston or the office job). I bought a new Ford pickup for the 180 mile round trip commute (100% not a fan). I also drive up to NW NM every few months so the miles add up quick. It started popping warning lights at the 100,000 (2 year) mark so I replaced it with a GMC pickup last year. That ones almost at 100,000. Lots of trips to NM and one round trip to WY/UT. It's been a good truck but fuel mileage is terrible. 12-15mpg. The next one will be a Ford diesel, maybe, but that's about a year away,

I’m going to go a bit off the rails here (and keep in mind I don’t particularly go off the road network) and put up my hand for a generic Volkswagen Taos SUV. It’s not a “truck” per se, but dropping the tailgate gives me five feet of space and it seats 4 comfortably. A bit small and I wish I had a real truck, but I don’t hate 35mpg even with cheap fuel.

i drive chevy brand only cause i don't like dealing with recalls! ymmv! my parents and grandparents had mostly fords back in the days (40's-80's) and a few dodge's (power wagons) and that was probably the best choice for farm and ranching cause back then chevy (and gmc's) front ends were not that good! going across rough pastures and holding up good enough to make it to the next day and beyond + they had part ownership of a few dealerships. i'm in possession of the 40' ford they moved here when relocating from ks in. my grandma wouldn't sell it to me due to she thought i would turn it into a hotrod. it's in way to good of shape to do something like that..............all original parts including the tires that still holding air.

That’s…vaguely terrifying. You do know tires aren’t good just because they hold air, right?

yes, but for 85 years and still holding air is incredible! it's just part of the all original parts list. it's been kept inside an insulated building for over 50 of those years and inside a garage/building the another 30.

You haven't seen where my Land Cruiser has been Alan. It's not a mudder but that thing is second only to a Jeep

Oh... that's what those letters were?

The GMC (so far) and the Ford survived the horrors of round tripping on the bobsled run between Columbus and Houston. My new years resolution(s)are to slow down, a little, quit wishing you could PIT the person watching movies in the left lane, quit wishing other things on road blockers, and once I retire I will not go to Houston. Ever. Maybe.

I've been all over the map on this. I've had a 68 Chevy SWB, a 78 Heavy Half, a 84 SWB Chevy with a 305 and a granny 4 speed, and positrac, an 01 Ram with a 318 and a 5 speed, and currently a 2013 GMC. I had an 01 Ford 3/4 ton van at work that I loved but it would blow sparkplugs and eat rear ends.

I'm thinking about going to a Colorado/Canyon for my next one. To those who have one, how do you like it? Word in the wind is Ram is bringing the Dakota back, possibly with the Hurricane 6. Should be spicy!
