I believe it matters more than people think, especially up close. Taller mounts change holds and can bite you if you ignore them. So pick a height, learn it and stop switching setups every other range trip.

Changing how high my scope was everytime messed with my holds. Once I stuck with one and practiced, I was hitting close shots again.

It is a key data point in ballistic calculator inputs and will make a significant impact if you have it wrong, especially the further you shoot.

I use the lowest rings that give me a good cheek weld and puts my eye in line with the optic. If you’re talking red dots, it doesn’t matter as much. Properly sighted in, the bullet hits where the dot is, but finding it quickly is key.

We have to practice headshots monthly with our Patrol Rifles equipped with "red-dot" sights. The closer you are to the target, it could make all of the difference between shooting the bad guy or shooting the hostage. Within 10 yards, we constantly have to remind ourselves to "aim high". If you do this regularly, it becomes second nature to determine your red-dot holdover at various yardages automatically.
