I started building a custom precision rifle three years ago. It's 90% complete and has been for two years. Every time I'm about to finish it, I see a better scope or stock or trigger and start second-guessing. At this point it's not a project, it's a permanent state of 'almost done.' Maybe perfection is the enemy of completion..

One side of that coin is never start building without a blueprint and detailed parts list and then follow it to the letter no matter what. The other side of the coin is get the latest, greatest, newest, coolest even if it's found literally while bolting down the current piece. Side A, provided it's a quality blueprint and parts list, gives you a really really good finished project in a reasonable time. Side B gives you an always moving never reachable destination. Now back to my mountaintop for more deep thinking. :)

Knowing myself, I just picked out the stock , the action, the barrel, and the caliber and let Alamo Precision Rifles build mine. I told them to call me when it was ready. This is just a hunting rifle and I’m good to 300/350 yards, but most of my shots are under 200. It’s a great rifle for my uses.

We give up. What caliber is it? Factory or handloads?
The ancient .280 Remington for an ancient man. 🙂 This rifle has never had a factory load in its chamber except for proofing. Fifty-three grains of RL 19 under a 140 grain Sierra Game King in Norma brass w/ CCI primers. Probably 2750 to 2800 fps, but I’ve never chronoed it. It does what I need doing.

Careful now. .280 Rem is a 1957 variety and so am I, old, but not ancient. Yet anyway. :) Maybe after April and the Appleseed clinic. If I even survive it. :)
