I got a green card 2 years ago (my wife is a US citizen, so are my 2 kids who live and work here in the US and I wanted to be closer to kids) and reside here 8-9 months a year and fly back to Paris to refill on baguettes, French cheeses and croissants, see friends and get medical checkups (I have zero insurance here and have paid for about 40 years into the French healthcare system)
First thing I did when I got my Texas Drivers Licence was to go to a gun store and buy a Python, then a Beretta 92, then guns, guns and more guns, an AR15, etc... My favorite gun is a Dan Wesson Guardian 1911. Latest purchase is a MAC Meusoc 1911, quite enjoyable, as are the entry level Tisas 1911s.
I'm studying the 1911, the gun, its history, its creator, the entire legend. I have rust blued my Garrison as a first attempt (success!), and am embarking on a journey to build my own 1911. I'm a bit intimidated by the barrel fitting, the rail fitting, but apart from that, I'm confident I'll be able to complete a build. Will it suck? Probably, but I will learn a lot and will apply the lessons to the next build, and so on. I really like revolvers and 1911s, not so much the plastic guns even though I enjoy shooting my Walther PDP and an HK with a ton of letters that make zero sense in the model name (German engineers for you). I would love to get a Manurhin MR73 Gendarmerie, but at $4K, it's a lot. I tried one once and I remember wishing I were richer! So I'm pondering whether I should sell an organ, or two...
I love it here in Texas, really cool people and the gun laws are cool too! I took CCL classes and cant believe I can be in and out of a gun store in less than 15 minutes. Compare that to Europe... The Second Amendment is one of America's best ever inventions!!!
Since I started shooting at the tender age of 60 and my brain and muscles are fried compared to 45 years ago, I am a slow learner and shoot terribly. But I enjoy the experience tremendously and I dont really care if my groups are 1 foot wide!
