Went to pull the cards on some game cameras this afternoon. At one of them...as I approached the tree the camera is mounted on, I noticed the grass moving just ahead of me about 3 feet. Clearly a snake moving through the grass....though I couldn't actually see it.

We have a lot of different snakes on the property, chiefly Rat Snakes. Quite a few Copperheads in this particular area. Anyway, it crawled up against the base of a large Water Oak and stopped. I moved up closer to take a look and could see the white mouth 'gapping'. Dead give away...it was a Cottonmouth. I had just killed one 4 days ago about 20' from where this one was.

And another one up by our house a week before that.

I keep our yard (several acres) around the house mowed short and keep the pastures in good shape (look more like mowed hay meadow). So I don't know why all the movement suddenly.

I didn't have anything in the back of the Land Cruiser except a couple of fishing poles and a boat paddle. So.....Boat Paddle it was.

Normally, when I encounter them out the woods....I just let them go on their way. But this one (and the one right before it) were both in a spot I go to regularly. Guess I'll need to start wearing my boots for awhile.

I have had so many snakes this year including rattlesnakes, never seen so many. Aggressive too, killing rabbits in the hutch, never experienced it before.

There have been some in our neighborhood, but I haven't see any. Which is a bit of a surprise as we have about five rabbits living underneath our shed.

Man that's a big one think I would definitely be wearing the boots

Looks like lunch, a little butter in a cast iron skillet with some salt and pepper with jalapeños. Perfecto and yes I have eaten a cottonmouth in Boy Scouts on a survival camping trip

I let them go on their way too, but their way is straight to cottonmouth hell. I always have a gun on my person.
When I was about 8, ages ago, we lived in a small community built by a guy with $ as a hobby the St John's river. We'd go out on the large rocks the owner covered the river bank with and kill cottonmouths.

Being little jerks, we once took dead cottonmouths and chased girls with them. I once threw the carcass at a girl, it hit the door handles and wrapped around them just before the girl reached for the handles. Freaked her out.

Nope not going to be living here! I have lots of king snakes and and rat snakes and occasionally a copperhead. With a creek and a pond I stay on top of keeping venomous snakes culled out! Also many don’t know but possums will kill and eat snakes….
